With mouthwatering aromas, festive sounds, and the unmistakable warmth of Sicily, San Gregorio di Catania transforms every summer into the capital of the meatball. Welcome to “Polpette in Festival”, a gastronomic event entirely dedicated to one of the most beloved and versatile dishes of Italian cuisine, in all its forms. A weekend filled with flavor, creativity, and joy, where the humble meatball reigns supreme—both at the table and in the streets.
🗓️ When Does It Happen?
The 2025 edition of the festival will take place from July 18 to 20, in the heart of the town at Piazza Immacolata. For three consecutive days—Friday, Saturday, and Sunday—visitors can enjoy dozens of meatball varieties, discover new recipes, watch live cooking shows, enjoy concerts, and much more.
🍴 The Meatball: Small, Round, Irresistible
It’s no coincidence that an entire festival is dedicated to such a “simple” dish. The meatball is more than just food: it represents memory, family, creativity, sustainability, and innovation. Every region—and in fact, every family—has its own unique recipe. Fried, in tomato sauce, vegetarian, made with fish, spicy, or even sweet… there’s a meatball for every palate and every generation.
During the festival, you can taste over 50 variations of meatballs, including:
- Classic meatballs in tomato sauce (Neapolitan-style, spicy, or traditional)
- Fish meatballs: swordfish, tuna, or salt cod
- Vegetarian meatballs: eggplant, chickpea, lentil, zucchini
- Gourmet meatballs with Bronte pistachios, aged pecorino, or sweet-and-sour sauces
- Sweet meatballs made with chocolate, almonds, ricotta, or figs
A true celebration of Italy’s culinary diversity, with a few international twists thrown in—such as American-style meatballs or Middle Eastern kofta.
🧑‍🍳 Live Cooking Shows, Culinary Challenges, and Workshops
One of the most engaging aspects of “Polpette in Festival” is the interactive atmosphere. In addition to the food stands, the program includes:
- Live cooking shows with local chefs and special guests
- Meatball competitions: friendly (and tasty) contests between cooks
- Children’s workshops: make your own meatball and take it home!
- Guided tastings with food experts and sommeliers
The goal is to promote a culture of good, heartfelt food and to pass on the joy of cooking and sharing to the younger generations.
🎶 Music, Performances, and Fun
The festival isn’t just about food. Every evening from 9:00 PM, the main stage will come alive with live bands, DJ sets, Sicilian comedians, and street performers. There’s also a dance space and a children’s play area with dedicated animation and activities.
Highlights from previous editions included:
- Ethno-pop group Qbeta
- Sicilian comedian Giuseppe Castiglia
- Emerging local artists
For 2025, organizers promise even more surprises: free concerts, comedy acts, and a brand-new show called “The Theatrical Meatball”, a food-themed comic monologue that’s bound to make the crowd laugh and drool.
📍 Where It Takes Place and How to Get There
The festival is held in Piazza Immacolata, the town’s central square, easily accessible from all over the Etna region.
Getting There:
- By car: just 15 minutes from Catania (San Gregorio exit on the ring road). Ample parking nearby.
- By bus: direct routes from Catania via AST and FCE lines.
- By train: nearest station is Cannizzaro, just 5 minutes away by taxi or car.
For out-of-town visitors, local B&Bs and agriturismi are available, some offering special rates for the festival period.
đź’š An Inclusive Event for Everyone
One of the festival’s key strengths is its accessibility: free entry, affordable prices, and spaces designed for families, children, individuals with disabilities, and even pets.
What’s more, each year “Polpette in Festival” supports a social cause. A portion of the event’s proceeds is donated to projects focused on inclusion, education, or food assistance. In 2025, the theme will be food waste reduction, with special workshops and guest speakers from the food recovery world.
📸 “Capture Your Meatball” Contest
To engage visitors on social media, the festival will host the #PolpettaFest2025 photo contest. Anyone who shares the most original or funny photo from the event (whether it’s a dish, an outfit, or a fun moment) on Instagram or Facebook will be eligible to win:
- A dinner for two at a local traditional restaurant
- A gourmet box featuring Sicilian products
- Official festival merchandise
