The Feast of San Cono a Naso is one of the most heartfelt religious celebrations in the town of Naso, in the province of Messina, in Sicily. San Cono is the patron saint of Naso and the festival in his honor takes place twice a year: on 1 September and 28 February.
History of the Feast of San Cono a Naso
San Cono was born in Naso in 1139 and from a young age he chose the hermit life, dedicating himself to prayer and penance. His reputation for holiness grew rapidly and, after his death in 1236, he was venerated as a saint. The devotion to San Cono spread not only to Naso, but also to other parts of Sicily and even among Sicilian communities abroad, especially in Latin America.
Over the centuries, the city of Naso has always honored San Cono with solemn religious and civil celebrations. The main festival is held on September 1st, the day on which the statue of the saint is carried in procession through the streets of the town. On February 28, however, a more intimate celebration is celebrated, which recalls a miraculous event attributed to San Cono.
